Also known as citriodora oil, our lemon eucalyptus essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of our plantation. Since 2009, we have selectively grown the trees from our own seed stock ensuring good yields. We hand prune and coppice the trees on a rigorous cycle that takes time and expertise.

Our oil has a unique fresh citrus scent – a clean, crisp palette - and is excellent quality. It is grown and distilled at an altitude of 1800m where the annual rainfall is around 1200mm. 

Our oil is very attractive for a wide selection of clients and uses, with its citronellal and citronellol level within global standards.

This clear fragrant oil is excellent for use in perfume, cosmetics, insect repellents, and even medicinally. To date, we have sold our oil regionally and in Europe.

We sell in ton quantities, FOB or CIF, and package in UN approved IBCs or drums. Please email us for availability and pricing.

KHP produces a number of ‘minor’ essential oils that are produced upon order including lemongrass, rose geranium, eucalyptus species and Tagetes minuta (marigold).


Sustainable Charcoal

Our charcoal is sustainable, sold nationally, and can be bought with a clear conscience. KHP has been at the forefront of the charcoal debate in Malawi, initially through lobbying and now by showing a working forestry model, producing both a cash and fuel crop. We endeavour to keeping growing fuel wood responsibly, providing an example of how a sustainable model can be developed.

The timber used comes from our own trees raised from seed, and are planted and tended by us for the leaves. The timber left over is a by-product of our business and we use it to help curb Malawi’s energy crisis. We sell 5kg premium bags, 15kg bulk bags, and 1.5kg bags.

We are proud that Kawandama Hills was the first company to be issued with a sustainable charcoal licence to produce and retail legal charcoal in Malawi in 2015. This was achieved through the Department of Forestry and they have issued 7 licences since then.

Our Virisafe brand

Virisafe is KHP’s natural value added products brand. Our repellent and sanitisers use active ingredient P-menthane 3,8 diol (PMD- rich oil) that is registered with the Pesticides Control Board in Malawi. It is a natural, non-toxic, and verified ingredient by the European Biocide Directive as an insect repellent.

The advantage of PMDRO is that it provides a residual, lasting, sanitising effect for 3+ hours after each application. Alcohol-based products will kill viruses and germs instantly but reinfection can occur immediately. This residual effect and its non-toxicity is what makes this active ingredient unique.

Virisafe’s enhanced formula is safe for kids, non-sticky and has a fresh natural fragrance.

Virisafe Natural Mosquito repellent

Natural & Safe Body Spray

Kawandama Hills through its Virisafe brand has launched its Repellent for Africa campaign and this aims to provide locally made, quality, low cost mosquito repellent to help combat malaria and tropical disease.

Made from 30% PMD rich oil, it has a 8hour repellency effect and is a strong deterrent for mosquitoes. It is a body spray and is very safe for recurring use on skin. The repellent can be used to combat ticks, midges, bed bugs and sprayed onto the mosquito net. However, it is best applied on the skin and leaves a refreshing smell that has become Kawandama’s signature aroma.
